The Athletic Training Division requires ALL current ATH TRNG 303 students and all students who have been accepted into the major to complete a training program in the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard.  Additionally, all students accepted into the major must also complete training in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Failure to complete this training by the posted deadlines will impact the student's eligibility for clinical placements.

OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Training (all AT majors & ATH TRNG 303 students)

Your OSHA Training Requirement depends on your year in the program:

  • View the online education module from the Office of Environmental and Health Services and take the test at the end (or choose to test out)
    • Choose the blood borne pathogen training module from the list. You will go to a registration / sign-in page.
    • you will need to register an account with OEHS on this website to take the training and you will receive a confirmatory email once you do.
    • Once registered, go to training and complete the bloodborne pathogen training and take the test.
  • Submit a printed copy of the completion certificate to the AT Division office (to Becca Roby in Atwell 228H).

CPR, AED, & First-Aid Training (AT majors only, NOT ATH TRNG 303 students)

ALL students enrolled in the AT major MUST be certified in Professional Rescuer / Healthcare Provider CPR and in First-Aid at all times in clinical rotations.  We recommend that obtain/update your certification EACH SUMMER so that you remain current throughout the academic year.  If your Certification lapses, you will be immediately removed from clinicals and this will impact your clinical grade.

We only accept CPR certification that involves in-person demonstration of skills (no online only certifications).  CPR must be 2 rescuer for adults, children, and infants and must include bag valve masks. Regular Adult CPR does not meet the requirement. DEADLINE: Documentation of certification that will last through the entire academic year must be received in the AT Office prior to your clinical start date each year. Documentation can be photocopies of cards (both sides) or a letter/certificate from the instructor documenting the course and the dates.  There are three common ways to obtain this certification:

  1. American Red Cross:
    • Standard First-Aid (~$45) + CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (~$80)
  2. American Heart Association:
    • Heartsaver First-Aid + BLS Healthcare Provider
  3. Ohio State University:
    • Allied Med 200 + EDUPAES 102  (Note: the EDUPAES 122 CPR course is not professional rescuer CPR and is not acceptable)
  4. National Safety Council & Other Groups:
    • NSC does not currently offer an acceptable CPR course (need 2 person CPR)
    • Any CPR certification MUST include in-person skill assessment. We will not accept any online certifications that do not also include an in-person skills assessment.
    • If you plan to obtain certification from any group other than ARC, AHA, or OSU, you should contact Dr. Merrick to discuss your plan BEFORE you spend any money.  The AT Division is not responsible if you waste money on an invalid certification that you have not discussed with us ahead of time.

 OSU Medical Center ID Badges

  • ALL AT majors must obtain an OSU Medical Center ID Badge.  You only need to do this ONCE. To obtain your ID Badge, go to the Medical Center Security Office (S-127 Rhodes Hall - across from the Hospital Cafeteria Vending Area).  Their hours are 7:00 - 10:30 am and 1:00 - 4:30 pm M-F.  This MAP shows the office location [police badge icon on map]
