- CCH Offers RT Scholarships
- Laura Evans ('92), manager of Respiratory Care, ECMO, and
PFT at Columbus Children's Hospital met with senior RT
students on Wednesday, December 3 to explain scholarship
opportunities. She was accompanied by Holly Meyer from Human Resources and Melanie Stein, NICU RT.
CCH is offering $3000 scholarships to
selected students in exchange for a 18 month, full-time work commitment
following graduation. She described available RT
positions in NICU, PICU, & Pulmonary Unit, and Melanie described
being an NICU therapist.

OSUMC To Do LVRS
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
have designated 18 hospitals across the country, including The Ohio State University Medical Center, as sites to become hubs for providing lung volume reduction surgery to up to 41 million Medicare beneficiaries.
Respiratory therapists play a vital role preparing patients for LVRS
and in the recovery and rehabilitation of patients following LVRS, and
the implications for respiratory therapy
at OSUMC are huge. |
| RT Students Win Change Race!
With a total contribution $230.52 of loose change
and an average of $5.76 per student, RT students won the 2003 SAMP
Change Race to buy Thansgiving turkeys for families who might not
have one. Their reward is a pizza lunch scheduled for Friday,
November 21 at 1:15 in room 343 Atwell Hall. All RT students
are invited.

OSU Medical
Center Provides RT Scholarships
On Friday, October 24, Marc Mays ('78), Director of
Respiratory Therapy, and Deborah Rudy, Recruiter for Human Resources,
provided lunch and information about the Medical Center's 2003-04
Scholarship Program for Respiratory Therapy Students. They explained
junior-level students are eligible for $1500 and senior-level students are
eligible for $3000 as loans to be paid by their commitment to work full
time at OSUMC following graduation. They provided applications
materials and information; additional copies are available in the RT
Division office.

at the
annual meeting of the American Association of Cardiovascular and
Pulmonary Rehabilitation, October 16-19.
- RT Students Return
- Welcome
to 39 RT students who are enrolled Autumn Quarter, 2003. They come
from metropolitan Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and many
counties in between. In addition to Ohio, they come from
Alabama, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, Kentucky, South Africa,
and Taiwan. They are 10 men and 29 women, 18 to 36 years old
with an average age of 22. With an average GPA of
approaching 3.1, they are well prepared to become excellent future
therapists.

OSU RT Team 3rd in Asthma
Walk
- Over 500 participated in the 2003 "Blow the Whistle on Asthma" walk October 4 at
Easton Town Center. The walk was for asthma
research and programs of the American Lung Association of
Ohio. With 1 on crutches, 2 with four legs,
faculty, family, friends, alumni, and help from Brutus, the OSU RT
Student team was a huge success. Captain Sarah Varekojis reported
our team of 29 walkers raised a total of $2,387 making us the
third-highest fund raising team overall!! Because of our
third place ranking, we have won a gift basket from Harry and
David. -- Go Bucks!!

Curt Have BFGW

On Saturday, September 27,
faculty, students, and many, many friends and relatives gathered in
Steubenville, Ohio to celebrate the marriage of Georgianna Sergakis
and Curtis Martin. It was a 10 hour Greek wedding with all the
traditional festivities.
