VAREKOJIS WINS ARCF AWARD
Assistant professor Sarah Varekojis, PhD, RRT will receive the 2004 Respironics Fellowship in Mechanical Ventilation for the abstract she submitted with Christina Ayotte, BS, CRT (’04) on “The Use of Non-Invasive Mechanical Ventilation with Cystic Fibrosis Patients-A National Study.”  The award is through the American Respiratory Care Foundation and will be presented December 4, 2004 in New Orleans at the 50th International Respiratory Congress of the American Association for Respiratory Care. Congratulations Sarah!
 
 

 
Congratulations OSU RT Students Asthma Walk Team!
Our team of 35 walkers blew the whistle on asthma on Saturday October 2 and raised $2,783.00 for asthma education and research in Central Ohio for the American Lung Association. The top student fundraiser was Sara Rodgers (Class of 2006) who raised $300.00 and will receive $15.00 in Chipotle gift certificates. Captain Sarah Varekojis reported the 2004 team exceeded the number of walkers and fundraising from 2003. Final 2004 team rankings are pending. Go Bucks!

27 New RT Students Largest Ever
With expanded class size, increased awareness of RT @ OSU, and an outstanding applicant pool, 27 new students are joining RT Au’04, the largest incoming group ever!  There are 13 new junior level students joining 6 returning juniors who will begin their major courses Au’04, and there are 14 sophomores who will begin RT courses Au’05. They are 9 men and 18 women, 19-36 years old, and with an average GPA of 3.11, these 27 are also the best academically-prepared in several years. Coming from very diverse origins, including the Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland metro-areas, from across Ohio, From Napoleon and Jenera to Martins Ferry, and from Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Venezuela, Hong Kong, and Japan, they include a second generation RT and an aero-medical EMT.  Welcome future RTs.
 
Wagshul Donates Plethysmograph
Fred A. Wagshul, MD of the Asthma & Respiratory Center of South Dayton, Inc. donated a MedGraphics body plethysmograph and pulmonary function system to the Respiratory Therapy Division.  This valuable addition to our teaching and research resources was accomplished with the help of Karla Wourms King ('98), RRT who works at the Center.
