Wagshul Donates Plethysmograph
Fred A. Wagshul, MD of the Asthma & Respiratory Center of South Dayton, Inc. donated a MedGraphics body plethysmograph and pulmonary function system to the Respiratory Therapy Division.  This valuable addition to our teaching and research resources was accomplished with the help of Karla Wourms King ('98), RRT who works at the Center. 
 
RT @ OSU To Do ALA Asthma Walk 2004
RT students, faculty, and friends will be a team for the 2004 Blow the Whistle on Asthma Walk to be Saturday, October 2 at Easton Town Center.  Captain Sarah Varekojis has set goals of 30 walkers and $3000 for this year's team and hopes to surpass last year's 3rd place finish in fundraising.  To join our team as a walker or supporter, go to the RT @ OSU Asthma Walk Team  page.

The Respiratory Therapy Division's proposal to expand enrollment has been approved!  Beginning Au'04, the capacity of the new junior class will increase 33%, to 20 students, the largest ever.  The  growing statewide need for advanced therapists and a growing pool of qualified applicants were instrumental in determining the increase.
 
 
VAREKOJIS('96) GETS PhD, TEACHING AWARD
Sarah Varekojis had a great Spring Quarter.  In May she successfully defended her dissertation; at the School's Precommencement ceremony on June 12, she won the AMP Faculty Teaching Award which included a $1000 prize; and on June 13, she became Dr. Sarah L. Varekojis.   On July 1 she became our newest Assistant Professor. Congratulations, Sarah!

CHRISTY AYOTTE ('04) OSU OUTSTANDING SENIOR
Congratulations to Christy Ayotte, an RT honors student and President of the AMP Student Council, who was one of 21 seniors to receive The Ohio State University Outstanding Senior Award at the 43rd Annual Leadership Awards Program on May 7.  Christy is the first RT senior to win the award.  The award recognizes students who have made outstanding contributions to the OSU community in the areas of leadership, scholarship and service. It is among the highest awards conferred upon undergraduates at Ohio State.
 
CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2004 - 100% CRT
Mia Allen graduated magna cum laude  and #1 in the class. Also magna were Christy Ayotte, Natalie Burkeiwicz, and Jessica Marple. Graduating cum laude were  Kylie Carpenter and Ali Shadcher.  Ayotte, Burkeiwicz, and Meghna Patel  completed the AMP Honors program and graduated with distinction.   Allen, Ayotte, Burkeiwicz, and Marple were inducted into the Lamda Beta National Honor Society. The RT Class of 2004 includes 14 CRTs, 1 RRT, and 1 RPSGT!

 

HERB CONSULTS FOR CDC
Having been a spirometry course director for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for over 10 years, Herb Douce has been asked to help create spirometry examinations for the Workforce Screening and Surveillance Team of the Centers for Disease Control.
 
PHIL GOES IRB
Beginning in August, Phil Hoberty will be a member of the Biomedical Human Subjects Institutional Review Board responsible for review, approval, and monitoring of all university biomedical research proposals involving human subjects. He will be the first respiratory therapist to sit on the board.
