NEW RT WEB SITE
If you are reading this, then you have found the new Respiratory Therapy Division website. Features you may find useful include 'QuickFinder' from where all pages are linked, to improve navigation. The page for prospective students was reorganized, including a direct link to the Life and Breath video. Current course syllabi and student calendars and a clinical network were added for current students. Alumni email addresses are being added to the RT alumni page. Any suggestions should be mailed to respiratorytherapy@amp.osu.edu

NEW SENIOR SEMINAR
A new career exploration seminar is being offered for senior respiratory therapy students during Autumn Quarter. The purpose of this seminar is to provide students with the opportunity to explore a variety of career options through dialogue with professionals with diverse career paths and current positions. Guest speakers include: Joyce Brezny, RN, RRT and Trent Schofield, RRT from the Children’s Hospital Transport Team; Lisa Bueltel, M.S., RRT ('93, '95) from American Health Network; Dave Grams, RRT from Children’s Hospital; Lorelei Heineman, M.S., RRT ('87, '96) from Marion General Hospital; Kirk Hensley, RRT ('95) from Tyco/Puritan Bennett; Cindy Wright, RRT ('85) with sleep lab consulting; and Jill Clutter, M.S. from the graduate programs in SAMP. The students, the presenters, and the faculty are very excited about this new addition to the curriculum.

AARC STUDENT MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

The annual AARC student membership drive is underway. Students can become members of the association at a discount and save $10. Until November 1, 2001, students can join for $35. Make checks payable to AARC, and sign up on the official Student Sign-Up form.  Get form from Herb.

WELCOME PARTY
It’s welcome week 2001!  All respiratory therapy students are invited, and those enrolled in RespTher 595 are required to attend, a party at 1:30 pm on Friday, September 21 in room 440 of Atwell Hall. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided. This is a great opportunity to meet other students enrolled in the program, to get a free lunch, and to learn "What the junior year is really like."

NEW TEACHING ASSIGNMENTS
For 2001-2002, some RT courses will be taught by different instructors. Sarah Varekojis will be teaching "Neonatal-Pediatric Respiratory Therapy;" Phil Hoberty will be teaching "Teaching in Respiratory Therapy;" and Herb will be teaching "Advanced Patient Monitoring." Every 27 years, change is good!

2001 SENIOR PROJECTS GO TO SAN ANTONIO
Although all 2001 Senior research projects were interesting, informative, and worthy, two were submitted and selected to be presented at the 47 International AARC Respiratory Care Congress in San Antonio in December. They are: "An Assessment of a Respiratory Therapist-Directed Asthma Program" by Jaime Dewar, Lisa Bueltel, and Herb Douce and "Frequency and Importance of ACLS Skills in Adult Respiratory Care" by Stephanie Fenske, Joe Yokum, and Phil Hoberty.

RT INCENTIVES
Whether they are called sign-on bonuses or scholarships, employers are offering incentives. From Miami Valley in Dayton ($1,000 - $4000), OSUMC ($3000), and Toledo Hospital (rumored @ $7500) hiring bonuses are back! Columbus Children's Hospital is offering a $2500 scholarship with an employment comitment for 18 months after graduations. Look on the student bulletin board in room 440 for further information.

AGENCY NEWS
From CoARC: Based upon 2000 annual report, the Respiratory Therapy Division exceeded all "thresholds" for success on each of the required outcome measures.
From NBRC: While new candidate pass rates on computer-based CRT and RRT exams hover between 57% and 86%, OSU students and graduates are continuing at 91% and 100% passing. Go Bucks!
