Phil Hoberty To Be Tenured & Promoted

Although not official until approved by the OSU Board of Trustees, Phil Hoberty, EdD, RRT will be tenured and promoted to associate professor effective July 1, 2002. Phil is only the 3rd of 15 RT faculty members in 30 years to earn promotion and tenure. He was initially appointed 9/1/95 as an assistant professor, and he became Director of Clinical Education 7/1/96. He is a licensed RRT, ACLS instructor, and as a BLS instructor-trainer. At OSU he has taught in more than 60 courses, including graduate and undergraduate, academic, clinical, honors, and individual studies, averaging almost 10 unique courses per year. He also studies the impacts of factors which contribute to the outcomes of pulmonary rehabilitation involving almost 4000 patients, and he has published 14 articles, 14 research abstracts, and 3 book reviews among others. He has also presented his research at 12 national and international meetings, and his work has helped set national standards for pulmonary rehabilitation through clinical practice guidelines. He is distinguished as our first faculty member to be invited to present a lecture to the American Thoracic Society International Conference and at the Quebec International Symposium.

Respiratory Therapy Scholarship

Thanks to the relentless efforts of Bobby Hawk('86), the endowment for the scholarship fund is over $10,000.  Through his efforts creating and selling OSU sports memorabilia, Bobby has been the major force behind the fund. He has sold OSU football helmets signed by former All-Americans, basketballs signed by the 1960 champions, art signed by Heisman Trophy winners, among many other items.  Contact Bobby (osufanbh@aol.com) for information.

Winter Quarter Outcomes
Academics
Twenty-eight of 32 RT students improved their grade point averages during winter quarter. The senior class cgpa is 3.12; the junior cgpa is 3.35, and the sophomore cgpa is 3.20. Well done!

Pharmacy Changes OK
During spring quarters for 30 years, RT students took Pharmacy 470, "Pharmacology for Nurses," but in 2001 that course was eliminated and replaced with Pharmacy 480, "Integrated Pharmacology" taught by Dr. Dennis McKay. During winter quarter 12 RT students took Pharmacy 480 for the first time, and there was some concern that their background in biochemistry might be problematic for them. If their grades are any indication, Pharmacy 480 was a success with a B average, including 4 As, and none less than C-.

Spring Quarter Outlook
For Junior-level students, spring quarter, 2002 will include more clinical experience than ever before. The changes in pharmacology courses are providing the opportunity for all-day supervised experiences in intensive care units for the first time. Respiratory therapy 420, "Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Continuing Care" is also being offered for the first time during spring quarter. Students should be better prepared for their summer quarter entry-level clinical practicum than ever before.
