What You Need To You Before You Apply:
The cardiovascular perfusionist operates extracorporeal circulation equipment
during medical situations in which patients' circulatory or respiratory
functions and other procedures must be temporarily supported or temporarily
replaced with extracorporeal systems.
Students are expected to master the technical standards of their program.
- Acquire information as
presented through demonstrations and experiences in the basic and clinical
sciences, including but not limited to information conveyed through
laboratory dissection, and demonstrations of physiologic and physical principles.
- Acquire information from
written documents, computer information systems, and information presented
in images from paper, videos, transparencies, and slides.
- Synthesize all information
available to anticipate and prepare a cardiopulmonary bypass or other
extracorporeal system to meet each patient's unique needs.
- Assess and interpret digital
or analog representations of physiological data and manipulate perfusion
parameters in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Make rapid decisions in life
threatening situations where problem solving and critical thinking are
required.
- Communicate effectively and
efficiently with faculty, patients, families and all members of the health
care team about a patient's condition, as called for under the
circumstances.
- Perform interventions in
support of any patient requiring the use of extracorporeal circulation,
systems and technology.
- Practice in a safe manner and
respond appropriately to emergencies and urgencies.
- Adapt and function
effectively under various circumstances and rigors which are inherent in
the clinical practice of cardiovascular perfusion.
- Adapt to changing
environments and hours, display flexibility in the face of uncertainties
inherent in the clinical problems of patients.
Practice universal precautions against contamination
and cross-contamination with infectious pathogens (e.g. handling needles,
cardiopulmonary bypass equipment, blood and blood products, treating patients
with infectious diseases.)
