ADMISSION CRITERIA General
Admission to HIM for the collegiate student is based on academic achievement in program prerequisite courses, overall cumulative grade-point average (as calculated from all coursework taken at every accredited institution attended), and personal interview.
Knowledge of the profession and personal career goals as related to HIM are important. A personal interview will be requested once an application has been submitted. The interview focuses on knowledge of the field, career goals, and communication skills.
Applicants are expected to visit a HIM professional of their choosing in order to develop a better understanding of the profession. A letter on facility letterhead, signed by a health information administrator verifying your visit, must accompany your application.
Completion of all admission criteria does not assure that the applicant will be selected for admission, since admission is on a space-available basis.
Maximum enrollment is limited to 25 students per year.
First-time degree seekers must complete all General Education Curriculum requirements (GEC) prior to enrollment in the professional program (79-80 hours).
Those selected for admission are the most competitive applicants in relation to all who apply.
The School of Allied Medical Profession's minimum GPA for admission is 2.20; however, the average calculated GPA of the class most recently admitted was 3.40.
Note: All grades from all coursework taken at accredited institutions will be considered in evaluating applicants and computing the overall grade-point average. Students who have discontinued their college/university enrollment for a period of five years or more may qualify for a recalculation of grade-point for admissions purposes. Contact the School's Student Affairs Office for details.
POST-BACCALAUREATE OPTIONS Students who have a conferred baccalaureate degree at the time of admission have the option of completing a Certificate of Study or a second baccalaureate degree. Certificate students must complete all program prerequisites and requirements. Second degree students must also complete all GEC requirements.
