Allied Med 600 Internship in Health Sciences

INFORMATION SHEET

The Internship in Health Sciences is designed to offer Health Sciences Program students a significant opportunity to apply theoretical learning toward achievement of practical goals and skills under the supervision of a preceptor and internship coordinator, to gain experience in the student’s area of interest that can be documented, and to further the student’s self development. Students can earn academic credit, repeatable to a maximum of 10 credit hours, limited to 5 credit hours/quarter. The number of credit hours will be determined by the number of hours worked in the internship (1 cr hour = 40 hrs worked).

The internship will be a non-paid experience. In special situations or circumstances, and on a case-by-case basis, consideration may be given to the student receiving pay during the internship. In this instance, the student would make the contact and arrangements for pay with the preceptor and inform the academic coordinator.

The internship will provide a real-world, career-related work experience where students  assume temporary roles and projects as workers in an organization. Students will have the opportunity to link theory and practice, evaluate future career goals, gain hands-on experience, test various careers and work environments, and identify and develop career- related skills and abilities. The internship will also provide the opportunity for students to increase their marketability and connect with professionals for future networking. The specific outcomes of the internship will be unique for each student according to their personal interests, needs, and goals.

Prerequisites: Students must have completed cousework in the Third/Junior year of the Health Sciences Program and have approval of the internship coordinator.

Objectives:  Upon successful completion of the internship, the student will be able to:

  1. Refine a career-related and or post graduate goal
  2. Reflect on and articulate specific knowledge, skills, and experience gained
  3. Link the internship experience to Health Sciences Program coursework
  4. Develop portfolio materials for job search

Requirements: Students will meet with the internship coordinator. Students will work a

minimum of 120 hours per quarter and earn a maximum of 5 credit hours per quarter.

Students will complete assignments that include a proposal, an internship agreement, initial

plan of learning objectives and expectations, mid quarter evaluation and progress report,

final evaluation, final report, and prepare one portfolio item. The preceptor will complete a

mid quarter and final evaluation.

Grading Information: The internship will be graded satisfactory or unsatisfactory  (S/U)

by the internship coordinator. All assignments must be quality work and completed and

turned in on or before their due dates to receive a passing grade. Failure to complete
