The Geriatrics and Gerontology concentration provides basic knowledge and skills to work effectively and compassionately with an increasing population of older people. This concentration prepares graduates for entry-level positions in a variety of settings including retirement communities, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, home health agencies, and many others.

As a student in Geriatrics and Gerontology, you will learn about processes; physical and emotional challenges; prevention and wellness; systems, supports, and services; and issues and public policy all related to aging. And with additional required coursework, you can also be prepared to enter graduate/professional programs such as long term care administration, nursing, and social work.

As a graduate, you will have expanding career opportunities in a stimulating, challenging, and satisfying field. If you work with the many older persons who are very healthy and active, you might have a job related to educational opportunities, recreation and leisure programs, and volunteer activities. If you work with the smaller proportion of older persons who are frail and less active, you might have a job related to services provided in long-term care or other health care settings. Professionals work both directly with and indirectly for older persons.
