OSU Medical Technology Students Win Statewide Academic Challenge
Columbus, Ohio - On May 11th, the Ohio society of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS-OHIO) hosted their 4th Annual Academic Challenge for students graduating from Medical Technology and Medical Laboratory Technician programs throughout Ohio. Medical Technologists are laboratory scientists who are part of the medical team of specialists that work together to determine the presence, extent or absence of disease. There were eight Ohio colleges and universities participating in the Challenge. The student participants from the OSU Department of Medical Technology included Shannon Edwards, Christine Hoppe, Keelie Kuhn, Andrea Lorenz, and Laurel Zilka. The team was organized by Dr. Kathy Waller.
Throughout the entire game, the OSU medical technology students showed poise and a strong knowledge of all the clinical science areas (which includes microbiology, hematology, blood banking, immunology, body fluids, and chemistry). Team OSU played against the University of Cincinnati and the University of Akron in the finalists round. The OSU team convincingly won the final round and placed first with a score of 62. The University of Cincinnati placed second with a score of 34, and the University of Akron finished with a score of 14. Congratulations to the OSU medical technology students and to all the participants of the 2007 ASCLS-OHIO Academic Challenge
