COLUMBUS, Ohio – Several physicians associated with The Ohio State University College of Medicine have received awards for sharing their time and expertise with medical students.
Distinguished Educator awards are given to faculty and preceptors who have shown extraordinary commitment to teaching and the promotion of outstanding patient care. Those receiving Distinguished Educator awards are:
• Dr. David Bahner (43212), emergency medicine, OSU Medical Center
· Dr. Jennifer Beard (43085), internal medicine, Riverside Methodist Hospital
· Dr. Lawrence Gabel (43081), family medicine, OSU Medical Center
· Dr. Sherri Martinez (43228), family medicine, Grant Medical Center
· Dr. Sherri Morgan (43081), family medicine, Mt. Carmel Health Systems
· Dr. Katrina Tansky (43202), pediatrics, Nationwide Children’s Hospital
Lifetime Achievement awards are given to physicians who have dedicated their professional lives and services to educating medical students.
Those receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award are:
· Dr. Pamela Boyers (43064), medical education, Riverside Methodist Hospital
· Dr. Ann Rogers (43054), pediatrics, Nationwide Children’s Hospital
· Dr. Robert Skully (43068), family medicine, Grant Medical Center
· Dr. Linda Stone (43235), Family medicine, OSU Medical Center
· Dr. Thomas Williard (43209), internal medicine, Mount Carmel Health Systems
The Preclinical Preceptor of the Year Award, which recognizes outstanding performance in the teaching of first- and second-year medical students in a community setting, was given to Dr. Joseph Cunningham, Jr. (43235), a pulmonary and sleep medicine physician associated with Mount Carmel Health Systems.
The Ambulatory Care Clerkship Preceptor of the Year Award, which recognizes outstanding performance in the teaching of third- or fourth-year medical students in a community setting, was given to Dr. Walter Wielkiewicz (43830) an internal medicine physician at PrimeCare in Zanesville.
The OSU College of Medicine has highly respected programs in research and physician training. It includes more than 1,000 faculty members, more than 800 students pursuing medical degrees and approximately 600 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs in the college’s School of Allied Medical Professions.
Earlier this year, Ohio State’s College of Medicine ranked 27th in Research among America’s 125 accredited medical schools in the U.S. News & World Report “America’s Best Graduate Schools” rankings.
In July, The Ohio State University Medical Center led the region with 10 specialties named as among the best in America in U.S. News & World Report magazine. In addition, the Medical Center is among only 21 hospitals in the country named to the magazine’s elite Honor Roll, which demonstrates a hospital’s excellence in at least six specialties.
