Home > Careers > OSU Clinical Residency in Pediatric Physical Therapy

The Nisonger Center at The Ohio State University, The OSU Division of Physical Therapy and the Nationwide Children’s Hospital, are proud to announce its clinical residency program for licensed physical therapists who are interested in pursuing a career in Pediatric Physical Therapy.  The residency program includes multifaceted specialty education designed to provide the pediatric resident with advanced clinical and leadership skills.  Clinical training is offered in a variety of academic and community pediatric settings, leadership training in developmental disabilities is through the LEND program at The Nisonger Center and teaching opportunities are offered both the classroom setting and in a community continuing education forum.  The School of Allied Medical Professions (SAMP) offers the possible option for a resident to  obtain graduate school credits toward a post-professional physical therapy degree.  The Nisonger Center plans to seek credentialed status for the Pediatric Physical Therapy Residency Program from the APTA in 2008.

The program is designed to prepare residents to take the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties examination in Pediatric Physical Therapy.  The program is 12 months in length beginning each year in September. Clinical training experiences will be provided in a variety of pediatric settings at The Nisonger Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.  Didactic educational experiences will be provided at The Nisonger Center and through the OSU Division of Physical Therapy.

During a typical week, the resident will participate in mentored and non-mentored clinical practice in hospital-based clinics, interdisciplinary diagnostic team clinics, a hospital-based outpatient department, and an early childhood education program.  The resident will also participate in the LEND leadership curriculum which includes graduate courses related to developmental disability and a leadership seminar.  During the OSU Summer Quarter the resident will spend a predetermined number of hours each week participating as a lab assistant and/or group facilitator in the OSU Division of Physical Therapy’s entry-level pediatric physical therapy course.

Residents can earn graduate credits for LEND courses and also have the option of earning graduate credits through SAMP that may be applied towards a graduate degree pending acceptance. The Pediatric Rehabilitation Master of Science program with a pediatric emphasis is offered through the OSU School of Allied Medical Professions.

The structure of the residency program allows for advanced learning experiences across multiple practice settings with a variety of patient populations.  The resident will gain advanced skills and knowledge in the diverse areas of pediatric physical therapy.  Residents will be employed full time by The Nisonger Center at OSU although practice and training responsibilities will cross several settings; this position includes a benefits package.
