As part of our education program we encourage student involvement with the Physical Therapy community on the local, state and national level.  All of our students are members of the APTA and many of them participate in the Student Conclave and attend the APTA's Combined Sections Meeting.  For the past 3 years we have promoted this participation by helping students pay for these trips.  We have also expanded our service learning opportunity to include a learning trip to Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, which has been quite successful. Below are some comments from students on the value of these opportunities.

The primary source of funds for these trips comes from donations to the Physical Therapy Development Fund (307895). This fund also supports necessary teaching materials for our various student learning experiences that arise throughout the year.

"This is a picture of myself and my recent clinical instructor, Lori DeShetler (OSU Sports Medicine in Gahanna).  As she is a great inspiration to me and representative of the caliber of PT I wish to become, I was pleased to have the opportunity for us to catch up at the OSU Alumni reception.  We also attended educational sessions together on total knee replacements and rehab for performing artists, further developing and solidifying some clinical concepts and skills she had taught me during my orthopedic and sports medicine rotation"

Attending the Combined Sections Meeting was a great experience.  I was able to network with physical therapists and students from all over the country as well as sit in on lectures that presented up to date research in our field.  CSM gave me a good perspective of where our profession is headed and only made me more excited about being a future physical therapist!

Even when the Division helps students with envolvement in these activities, many of these students struggle to meet the increasing high cost of their education. Some of those who are the most deserving are also the least able to afford those costs. There is a critical need to offer these worthy candidates scholarships to help offset the cost of their college tuition and fees. This gives these students a well-deserved opportunity to achieve their potential and their dreams.

The creation of the new Physical Therapy Alumni Legacy Scholarship Fund will enable more students to receive more substantial assistance. The goal of the “Alumni Legacy” scholarship is to raise $250,000 to build an endowment principal to provide as many as five partial tuition scholarships each year.

Individual endowments may also be established by donors wishing to honor a family member, mentor or teacher with a minimum gift of $50,000.
