Agroecosystem Management Program

Past GIS Projects

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographic data. GIS is integral to much of the research that AMP has conducted in the past and what we are working on now. Data from Mellinger Farm projects is being captured as vector data in a database that will allow analysis of changes to the Mellinger landscape. Past projects involving GIS include food mapping, mapping of agritourism potential, and supply chain mapping.

The above map was created by geocoding the USDA Organic INTEGRITY Database's listing of certified organic food operations in Ohio. This map shows the different ways data can be displayed. The Ohio Organic Farming layer shows operations color coded by their current status. The Crops, Livestock, Wild Crops, and Handling layers are all subsets of the main Ohio Organic Farming layer showing current Certified locations and have unique symbols to represent each category of operation.

The map app below was created as an example of the power of GIS as a presentation platform. Using videos from YouTube, Box Scores from the OSU athletics website, and graphics from Google we were able to build an ArcGIS web app that tells the story of the 2018 OSU Football season in an engaging and informative manner. The entire project was built in about two hours.

The Annual Stinner Summit is an annual event where attendees with diverse interests and expertise work together to develop projects that address healthy agroecosystems and sustainable communities. In preparation for the 2021 Stinner Summit we created a Story Map that looks back at all of the previous summits to celebrate the collaborations and projects that were created. By combining pictures, descriptions, and maps new attendees of the Stinner Summit can get caught up on what has come before, and returning participants can reminisce on what has been done and what can still be accomplished.
